Electrical/Wiring

HotRod Genius

When you need advice really fast...

A good working knowledge of how things electrical work is necessary unless you choose to use wiring systems (like Painless products (www.painlesswiring.com)) that do all the work for you. They also stock almost any part you can think of to put a great electrical system together.

We usually make all of our own harnesses, and stick to GM wiring color codes. We are accustomed to the GM system, and most American hotrods seem to follow it.

A great place to buy wire, connectors, tools, solenoids, relays, switches, etc., is Waytek Wire (www.waytekwire.com). They have minimums on some items, but the prices are such that they keep buying supplies affordable. They have the good crimping pliers, even for weatherpack terminals, soldering equipment, shrink materials, and harness coverings.

Make sure you have a good working knowledge of electricity if you are going to fabricate or repair a wiring system. Wiring mistakes happen at the speed of light, and once you let the smoke out of a wire or an electrical component it’s really tough to get the smoke to go back in. Better to get some advice than to burn up that new $1500 fuel injection system.
