Electrical/Wiring

When you need advice really fast...

This handbook is currently under construction.

Sometimes it’s just easier to buy a general wiring harness from one of the more popular wiring harness companies, but sometimes you might want to add a circuit, or customize a circuit. It helps to know some of the ins and outs of working with those wires. I once wrote a book entitles “When the Smoke Clears,” which was all about automotive electricity, and I think you can guess what the title referred to. Electricity is relatively easy to understand, but there are certain truths that need to be adhered to.

Tools are a big part of wiring, so we will discuss the different types of tools and what they are used for.

Connectors, terminals, relays, harness tubing and other wiring components are discussed, also. Suggestions on where to run wiring to keep the car clean as well as what to be careful of when running the wiring are also discussed. The operation of relays and LED systems are reviewed as well as some ideas that might act as thought starters for your project. It’s always cooler to build that thing you want to do rather than buying it. I always like to have parts on my car that are “1 of 1.” DVOMs, scopes, and other electrical diagnostic tools are also reviewed.

Safety is a big factor when it comes to electricity, so be aware of the warnings in this handbook. Electricity travels at the speed of light, and “oops” means “too late.” Keep that in mind when running and securing wires that could cause severe damage to that car you have spent so much time on.
