Make sure you have a good set of pressure gauges for measuring fuel pressures, etc. With fuel injection you may need to lengthen the hoses you use for readings gauges while you’ve got someone else driving the car. Good pressure at idle doesn’t mean a thing when you’re running down the road.
If you’re running mechanical fuel injection with no computer tie in then most of the equipment you will be using will be fairly common, but once you start getting involved with electronic fuel injection the tools starting getting a lot more complicated, expensive, and time consuming to learn. You’ll get involved with scan tools, lap tops, “flashing” computers, editing programs, etc.
And no matter what anyone tells you, the best tool to use on a stock type late model application for diagnosis is the factory tool, but if you are going to go in and change some programming then make sure you do your homework and choose the system from a company that is not only the most user friendly, but one that comes with support you can depend on. Fuel injection programming can take a lot of time, and you really need to know what you are doing.
